Greetings and hello, dear passengers!

Hello and hello, ladies and gentlemen!

The Swiss aren't just enough for theirs

Greeting "Grüezi", but also for your reliability,

Precision and economy known. Even if me

is aware that these are of course all clichés, so cover

these properties are actually completely related to mine

personal experience. In my time as CEO of

Star Alliance, it was often the colleagues

of the airline SWISS, which has exactly such properties

have scored.

So it is all the more gratifying for me as CEO of

Austrian Airlines, exactly from these Swiss for flights

has been commissioned as part of a so-called “wet lease”

to be. Wet lease means that our highly trained

Austrian crew in top-maintained Austrian aircraft in

Order and operate a route in the SWISS flight plan.

Of course, with the aim of providing you in the usual way

Bringing punctuality and reliability to your destination.

The order is the basis for the acquisition of four

Dash 8-Q400 from the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier.

Austrian Airlines will after this small expansion

Operate 18 aircraft of this type. Possibly sit

outdated technology kept. But that is wrong.

The Bombardier Q-Series is a state-of-the-art aircraft

and is due to its design for particularly reliable and

efficient. Funnily enough, the "Q" stands for "quiet",

although they are naturally louder than with their propellers

ordinary passenger jets.

But: The Dash 8-400 consumes compared to a

Passenger jet with the same seating capacity by 40% less

Kerosene. This also reduces CO2 emissions and the

Profitability increases. Airplanes of this type

also reach airports with larger machines

cannot or may not land at all. That’s in Lugano in the

Switzerland, for example, one of the airports that we have

from November 1st 2014 will be driving on behalf of SWISS.

And the aircraft are serviced at the Innsbruck site

in western Austria by in-house technicians. You are since

specialized in the maintenance of Dash and for many years

successfully offer their services to other airlines as well

at.

With this in mind, I wish you a pleasant,

but also precise and reliable flight. According to the statistics

you should have this with us.

Grüezi and hello!

///

The Swiss, of course, are well-known not merely for their distinctive

greeting, “Grüezi”, but also for their reliability, precision and

efficiency. And while I am of course aware that these are just clichés,

such characteristics do indeed ring partly true if my own personal

Experience of our Alpine cousins is anything to go by. During my time as

CEO of the Star Alliance, it was quite often that members of staff from

the airline SWISS would score top marks on the strength of just such

traits.

And that is why it is now even more satisfying for me, as the CEO of

Austrian Airlines, to have been commissioned by those same Swiss

colleagues to operate flights as part of what is known as a “wet lease”.

“Wet-lease” means our best-trained Austrian crews will be operating a

route, in Austrian aircraft maintained to the very highest standards, on

behalf of and subject to the schedule of SWISS. The requirement is of

course, that they take you to your destination in the punctual and

reliable fashion to which you have become accustomed.

The order forms the basis for our acquisition of four Dash 8-Q400

from Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. Following this minor

expansion, Austrian Airlines will be operating 18 aircraft of this type. It

is possible, of course, that you are currently sitting in one of these

aircraft just as you read this. You will know whether you are when you

see a propeller when you look out the window. Many people believe

propellers are an outdated technology. In fact, they could not be more

wrong.

The Bombardier Q-Series is a highly modern aircraft, and is viewed

as being particularly reliable and efficient due to its construction. That

“Q”, by the way, stands for “quiet”, even though with its propellers it is

Of course louder than normal passenger jets.

That said, however, the Dash 8-400 consumes 40% less kerosene

than a passenger jet with the same seating capacity. That means CO₂

Emissions are reduced, and efficiency is increased. In addition to this,

Aircraft of this smaller construction can reach airports where larger

machines are incapable, or not permitted, to land. This is the case in

Lugano in Switzerland, for example, one of the airports we will be

serving on behalf of SWISS from 1 st November 2014 onwards. And the

aircraft are being maintained at our Innsbruck site in western Austria,

by our company’s very own technicians. They have been specializing in

carrying out maintenance on the Dash for many years now, as well as

successfully offering their services to other airlines.

In this spirit, I would like to wish you all a pleasant - but above all

precise and reliable - flight today. According to statistics, we can

certainly offer you that.

Greetings and hello once again!

Your /// yours,

Jaan Albrecht

Ask the pilot: Why do your ears “pop” on landing?

EDITOR: MANUELA PRUSA

GERHARD PITSCH

is chief pilot with

Austrian Airlines.

Cause of the cracking

is the pressure equalization

of the inner ear.

The reason your ears pop

is the equalization of

pressure in the inner ear.

The higher you fly, the lower it is

Air pressure. He is only 5,000 m above sea level

half as large as at sea level, at 10,000 m

it is only a quarter. Thus takes

the air pressure decreases during the climb. Commercial aircraft

are built to control cabin pressure

constant from an altitude of 2,500 m

hold. Of course, he descends on the landing approach

at an altitude of 2,500 m back to the value

the outside air. Anyone with a runny nose

has flown knows the problem: at takeoff

and landing the plane drop the ears

too and it creates an unpleasant one

Feeling of pressure.

The cause of the cracking is the pressure equalization

of the inner ear. During take-off and landing

the ambient pressure changes within

less minutes. The middle ear must

adapt to this new air pressure, what

but in many cases not at the same time as the

Change in air pressure happens.

There are several ways to get one

To prevent a feeling of pressure in the ear or

to counteract. It is best to be on the day

promotes blood circulation and pressure equalization.

Also helps during takeoff and landing

swallowing or chewing gum frequently.

When it finally cracks, the pressure is equalized

produced.

For colds or a general lack of it

Please inform the pressure compensation

///

The higher you fly in an aircraft, the lower the air

pressure. At an altitude of 5,000 meters, it is half

that at sea level; at 10,000 meters it is just a quarter

what we are used to down on the ground. As a result,

the air pressure drops as the aircraft climbs to

cruising altitude. Commercial aircraft are built to

ensure that the air pressure in the cabin remains

constant from an altitude of 2,500 meters onwards.

During the approach flight, therefore, as the aircraft

gradually comes down to an altitude of below

2,500 meters, the air pressure rises back to the same

as the air outside. Anyone who has ever flown with a

cold will know the problem: during take-off and

landing, your ears pop shut, producing an unpleasant

feeling of pressure.

The reason for this popping is the equalization of

pressure in your inner ear. On take-off and landing,

the surrounding pressure changes within a few

minutes. While your middle ear has to adjust to this

new air pressure, this often doesn't happen as quickly

as the change in air pressure. There are various ways

of avoiding or counteracting a feeling of pressure in

the ears. One helpful measure is to drink lots of water

on the day before your departure. This aids circulation,

and consequently the equalization of pressure. It

also helps to swallow frequently or chew gum during

takeoff and landing. This produces the equalization of

pressure when your ears do finally pop.

If you have a cold or are feeling queasy from this

equalization of pressure in general, please let the

cabin crew know as early as possible. This will enable

us to help you out with other useful tips and

medication if necessary.

what they have not needed to change is the breathtaking view over the city, worth a visit in its own right. The brunch offered every Sunday is a good time to enjoy it.

Schiele / Saville

The Kunsthaus Zürich has an interesting dialogue about body and physicality

(until January 25, 2015) initiated: between the work of Egon Schiele (1890-1918) and

that Jenny Savilles, born in 1970. Between a representative of the modern age

penultimate turn of the century and a contemporary painter. Exciting.

physicality (to 25 January 2015), more specifically as a dialogue between the work

of Egon Schiele (1890-1918), a representative of the modernism of the turn of the

last century, and that of Jenny Saville, a contemporary female artist born in 1970.

Breathtaking.
