A protective strip is a painted bike path with a dashed line.1) There I usually drive to the left of the dashed line, i.e. not on the protective strip. Because the protective strip is only a few centimeters away from the so-called dooring zone.2) of the cars parked alongside. If I drive along there at 25km / h and someone opens the door, it causes very unsightly injuries when I drive in the door. But if I can still swerve and end up on the road, I may be run over by the following traffic.

In addition, motorists sometimes do not keep any distance at such protective lanes, even if according to court rulings they are obliged to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters also in such places, which in fact means that overtaking is prohibited in such places as long as there is oncoming traffic. One reason for this overtaking with too little distance is the protective strip itself. It suggests to motorists that everyone has their own lane and that you don't have to keep a distance. That is why most motorists are not even aware that it is dangerous if they just overtake.

So far, there have been two large studies on the overtaking distances on wheel protection lanes. First one from the Radmesser Projekt of the Tagesspiegel and recently a study by the "Accident Research of Insurers (UDV)". Both determine independently of each other that cyclists are usually overtaken with too little distance, see here.

Ultimately, like any other car driver, I drive with sufficient distance to parked cars. Only that for me it's not about sheet metal damage, but about my health.

Here is a picture from FFMbyBicycle from Frankfurt with a protective strip that leads directly through the door zone with an open door for the relations. Therefore, one should not even drive on such protective strips.

So drivers should always open the car door with the so-called "Dutch handle", see here, in order not to endanger cyclists.

In Belgium, by the way, the protective strip is also called the murder strip and was voted Unword of the Year in 2018.
