That's how we tested

We have tested the products extensively to get a meaningful test result. We have defined various test criteria, which are given an individual percentage weighting depending on their relevance. You can read about the criteria in the section"Test criteria".

Selection of products:

When selecting the products, we opted for inexpensive products from the drugstore as well as more expensive products and creams from natural cosmetics. This is how we achieve a balanced selection.

(Status: March 20, 2020)

The test criteria:

  • Opacity (30 percent): How intense is the opacity? Can the BB Cream smooth out irregularities in the complexion?
  • Care feeling (30 percent): In addition to the covering properties, a BB Cream should also have caring effects on the skin.
  • Color tone (10 percent): does the color tone blend in well with the natural complexion?
  • Durability (20 percent): A BB Cream should be everyday resistant and last a long time.
  • Sun protection (10 percent): To protect the skin from UV radiation, the BB Cream should contain at least an SPF 15.

The results of the test criteria add up to the overall star result for the respective product.

BB Cream: experience report

Online editor Kyra Piontek reports on her experience with a BB Cream:

“As you can see in the picture, I have a lot of freckles. In the past, during puberty, I didn't like these at all and I took the most opaque, full-coverage foundation I could find to make the freckles go away.

Today, however, I love my freckles. They make me special and give me a summery look even in winter. That's why I've been using a BB Cream instead of a make-up foundation for years.

With a BB Cream I take care of my skin all day long and even out my complexion without 'making up' my naturalness. It may not be as opaque as a foundation, but it evens out unevenness, supplies the skin with moisture and maintains its naturalness. "

For the before-and-after comparison, an unvarnished photo was taken and then the price-performance test winner, the BB Cream from Nivea, was used.

What is a BB Cream?

They are the masters of multitasking in cosmetics - BB Creams. But what does BB actually mean? The BB in BB Cream stands for “Blemish Balm”, which translates as “Makelbalsam”.

A BB Cream ensures that small blemishes on the face are evened out. A subtle tint of the cream makes the complexion more even and fresher. Redness and blemishes are easily covered.

But that's not all that the all-rounder can do. A BB Cream is also a moisturizing day care and often also a sunscreen.

Which is better: BB Cream or Foundation?

While a make-up foundation usually has a strong coverage and very few nourishing properties, a BB Cream is nourishing and toning at the same time. However, it usually has a more subtle coverage than a foundation.

If you want a full coverage look that covers redness and skin blemishes very intensively, you should rather use a foundation.

But if you want to keep your natural complexion, do not want a mask-like look and at the same time want to provide the skin with rich care substances, a BB Cream is well advised. Due to the subtle opacity, there are also no annoying make-up edges on the hairline or on clothing.

Make-up artist Loni Baur tells us in an interview why she is more likely to use a BB Cream:

“I'm not a fan of full coverage foundations myself. I like it when the skin is largely preserved as it is. That's why I'm definitely on the BB Cream side and then see that you still work with a concealer in some areas to hide redness and blemishes ”.

What is the difference between BB and CC Cream?

CC Cream means "Color Correcting Cream" and is a further development of BB Cream. It also supplies the skin with moisture and corrects the color of the complexion.

The CC Cream works with color pigments, similar to a concealer. CC Creams are the better choice, especially for more mature skin, as they compensate for unevenness in skin tone such as pigment spots or small veins and refresh pale skin tone without appearing unnatural. CC Creams can also contain other active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or coenzyme Q10.

We tested Erborian's CC Cream. It creates an even complexion, provides the skin with long-lasting moisture and adapts to the natural skin tone. They are available here on amazon.de.

Who are BB Creams for?

BB creams for dry skin donate a lot of moisture and often only have a very light covering power. The skin looks fresher and more radiant.

BB creams for blemished skinoften have a higher opacity to hide impurities and at the same time have an antibacterial effect. Because blemished skin is usually very oily, BB Creams have a mattifying effect on blemished skin.

BB creams for normal skin have a balanced fat and moisture content. So they donate moisture without over-caring for the skin, even out the complexion and give it a fresh finish.

How do you use a BB Cream?

Using a BB Cream is not very complicated. If you keep these points in mind, you can't go wrong:

  • Apply your BB Cream to the cleansed face in the morning.
  • If you have particularly dry skin, you can add a facial serum or your usual day cream to the BB Cream.
  • People with normal or oily skin should avoid too much care. One BB Cream alone is enough for the whole day.
  • Due to the light texture, you don't need a sponge or brush to apply a BB Cream.
  • Use your fingers to spread a small amount of the BB Cream over your face in a circular motion, much like you would a moisturizer.
  • Let the BB Cream run out slightly on the neck, ears and hairline to avoid edges.
  • Don't forget to cleanse your face thoroughly in the evening. A BB Cream is not a night cream.
