Eddard Ned Stark is a knight

character

Eddard "Ned" Stark

  • Status: Executed by the young King Joffrey Baratheon
  • Role: Lord of Winterfell, "Hand of the King" under Robert Baratheon
  • Properties: Battle-tested leader with clear principles, overwhelmed by the intrigues at court
  • Famous quote: "Winter is coming."
  • Family: Husband of Catelyn Stark, father of Robb, Sansa, Arya, Brandon and Rickon and alleged father of Jon Snow

His death was the surprise of the first season and set the tone for the entire series: With "Game of Thrones" no life is safe. Because Eddard "Ned" Stark was the main character of the whole story until then. The upright and battle-hardened Lord von Winterfell was persuaded by his old friend, King Robert Baratheon, to become his "hand of the king", his closest adviser and regent, after the death of Jon Arryn.

At the court of King's Landing, Ned didn't feel at home right from the start: He was a man of action, the scheming intrigues overwhelmed him. When he learns that the birth father of the children of Robert's wife Cersei Lannister is actually her twin brother Jaime, he wants to teach the king. But he is already dying after a hunting accident.

Ned makes a momentous discovery

He uses Ned as the "protector of the empire", who is supposed to rule until his son Joffrey is old enough. But after Robert's death, Cersei tears up his injunction and has Ned arrested. Although Ned, in order to protect his two daughters, recognizes Joffrey as king and asks for exile with the Night's Watch, the young ruler has him beheaded against the will of his mother and the council.

In season 6 there are serious revelations about Ned's past: his son Bran sees a vision of how Ned wants to free his sister Lyanna from the hands of the Targaryens. Ned always said he won the battle of the Tower of Joy gloriously, but that's not true. The outstanding fighter Ser Arthur Dayne actually defeated his father, but Lord Reet stabbed him in the neck from behind so that Ned was able to strike down the already dying Arthur. In the tower, Ned finds a bleeding Lyanna who has just given birth to a child. On his deathbed, he has to promise her that he will take care of the newborn. The child is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen and is later known as Jon Snow.

actor

Sean Bean

Ned Stark's death came as a surprise not least because his role was occupied by the biggest star to date: Sean Bean not only played in blockbusters like "James Bond 007 - Goldeneye", "Ronin" or "The Legacy of the Knights Templar", but also in the celebrated "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which many fans regarded as the benchmark for a successful fantasy film adaptation. He himself described the plot of "Game of Thrones" briefly and aptly: "It's like 'The Lord of the Rings' - only with sex." Without adding: And in the end I'm dead. True fans should have known it. Sean Bean has long been famous for the fact that his often striking characters die on screen.

Most recently, Bean was in the Oscar nomination and with two Golden Globes® excellent drama "Der Martianer", the science fiction film "Jupiter Ascending" as well as in the series "The Frankenstein Chronicles", "The Oath" and "The Medici - Rulers of Florence".
