Participants complete the first four examination units in one day. The oral part (Speaking) can also take place a few days before or after the written part, depending on the test center.

Cambridge CAE rating scale

Each of the five examination areas receives one Rating on a scale from 0 (low) to 20 (high). The total number of points results from the sum of the five individual points.

The scores are divided into different sections. The Cambridge CAE is considered to have been passed in the sections:

  • Grade A (80 to 100 points)
  • Grade B (75 to 79 points)
  • Grade C (60 to 74 points)

Grade A already corresponds to language level C2, i.e. the next level above C1. If a candidate achieves this rating, this is also noted on the certificate. Grade B and Grade C, on the other hand, correspond to language level C1.

Those who achieve a score between 45 and 59 have not passed the CAE, but will at least receive a certificate that the language proficiency achieved corresponds to level B2.

With less than 45 points, the CAE is not passed at all. It is possible to repeat the CAE to improve the assessment achieved. There are no limitation of attempts.

Unlike the TOEFL or IELTS, for example, the CAE is fundamental valid for life. Nevertheless, it can of course happen that the university of your choice only accepts test results that, analogous to the validity periods of other tests, are not older than two years.
