Preparations for cooking carrots

Carrots are a very popular vegetable, not least because, in addition to beta carotene, they also have a high content of potassium, iron and vitamin C. The crunchy roots are often nibbled raw - but they can also be cooked and eaten either as a vegetable side dish or as a main course. Newcomers to the stove in particular are often unsure and do not know how to best cook carrots. Find out here!

Peel and wash the carrots

Take the amount you need Carrots Remove the herb from the outer packaging or from the bunch of carrots. Now cut off the top and the tip with a kitchen knife. With the help of a vegetable peeler, the orange bars can now be peeled off very easily. If you prefer to use a knife, you should make sure to peel really thin, otherwise too many valuable ingredients will be lost. Then the carrots are washed under running water. (If you have carrots in your own garden, you should rinse them off after harvesting so that the earth is washed down.)

Cut the carrots

Carrots tend to slip away when you cut them. A sharp kitchen knife and a suitable cutting mat are necessary so that you do not injure yourself during this work. (A slightly heavier wooden board or a cutting board with knobs is suitable here.) Now first cut the carrots in half lengthways and then quarter them. Now small cubes are cut. Of course, you can also cut carrot slices instead of carrot cubes. The thinner these are, the faster they will cook when they are cooked. You can cook small finger carrots whole. They look particularly decorative as an accompaniment to meat or fish.

How long do carrots cook? (Duration)

Take a sufficiently large saucepan and bring the water to the boil in it. To make the carrots taste even better, add a little salt or vegetable stock to the water. The chopped carrots are put into the boiling salted water and have to cook covered for about 5 - 15 minutes. The cooking time depends on the size of the carrot pieces. The smaller these are, the faster the vegetables will cook.
Tip: carry out a cooking test. To do this, simply prick a piece of carrot with a kitchen knife. If this easily slips off the blade, the carrots are soft.

Drain the carrots and season to taste

When the carrots have reached the desired firmness, they are carefully poured off with the help of a kitchen sieve. Now season the carrots with salt and pepper and add a little butter. The fat is necessary because otherwise the human body cannot optimally utilize certain vitamins. And by the way, the carrots taste even better with a little butter. If you like, you can also add a little sugar to emphasize the sweetness. Cooked carrots look particularly nice sprinkled with finely chopped parsley.

Alternative cooking options contain many vitamins

If you want to prepare the carrots in a way that is particularly gentle on vitamins, the following procedure is recommended:

  • Peel, wash and slice the carrots
  • Heat some olive oil in a saucepan and briefly fry the carrots in it
  • add a little water (carrots should not be completely covered) and steam for about 10 minutes (do a cooking test)
  • Drain and refine with butter and sugar

The carrots can be prepared even more gently by not boiling them, just heating them in steam. To do this, fill a large pot with a little water, hang a sieve insert with the carrots in it so that they do not touch the surface of the water. Keep the lid closed while cooking. The same applies here: make a test!

As you can see: Cooking carrots is not that difficult and even beginners in the kitchen will be able to prepare these vegetables without any problems.
