Is there a toilet that is not clogged
Clogged toilet? Here's how to eliminate the problem
If the toilet is clogged, the distress is great. Because while you can still help yourself with a defective sink drain, the options are very limited if the toilet clogs - for example because you have used the wrong paper. You don't have to call a craftsman right away. Depending on how deep in the pipe the blockage is, it can be removed with simple mechanical measures or even home remedies.
Reasons for a clogged toilet
There can be many reasons why a toilet becomes clogged. One is that we use the toilet as an everyday object, but we don't notice that modern toilets are well thought-out devices developed by engineers. All properties such as water pressure and volume, structure and volume of the cistern, the pipe diameter of the water inlet and outlet, the surface properties and the shape of the pool - all of this is optimized to remove waste and toilet paper. And only these substances.
However, not all users adhere to only disposing of the things in the toilet for which it was made. One of the most common causes when the toilet becomes clogged is improper use as a rubbish bin: cat litter, leftover food, deep-frying oil, tampons, towels, cigarettes and household waste have no business in the toilet. These things usually disappear from view the first time you wash. But they often don't make it into the sewer system.
On the long pipe route between the toilet and the sewer system, heavier parts remain and narrow the drain. The fatal thing is: The users do not notice the constriction immediately. Over time, however, more and more particles stick to the deposits and gradually clog the pipe completely.
Wrong paper can also clog the toilet
Paper is another cause of a clogged drain: toilet paper quickly breaks down in water into sufficiently small components that normal water pressure rinses it away. Napkins, handkerchiefs and hard types of paper such as kitchen paper have completely different properties and are therefore not suitable for the toilet. If you run out of toilet paper and find an alternative, you should not dispose of kitchen paper and Co. in the toilet, but in the residual waste.
And the amount of toilet paper is also decisive: the small amounts of water that modern toilets only use per flush are no longer sufficient for excessive toilet paper. The solution here is to use less toilet paper or to do intermediate flushes.
With a toilet brush and pressure against the clogged toilet
If the cause of the toilet blockage is still to be found in the siphon, you can try your luck with the toilet brush first. But be careful, there is an acute risk of splashing!
The brush is quite suitable for loosening and crushing a wad of toilet paper. You have to poke around a bit, but you must never push the paper harder into the opening. The secret of toilet brush technology is that the wet toilet paper gets caught in the bristles and thus frays the clog. If some of the water with the paper has drained off, you can rinse and repeat the procedure until everything is clear again.
Use the plunger to free the toilet from the blockage
After clearing a blockage with the toilet brush and also whenever the cause is deeper in the drain, the plunger / plunger is a good aid. There are correspondingly large rubber bells in the hardware store for toilets with their large openings.
Place the plunger on the drain and move the handle up and down without lifting the rubber off the ceramic. The resulting negative and positive pressure can loosen light to moderate blockages.
Compressed air guns also work with overpressure for the drain. Their effectiveness depends on their volume and on whether a sufficiently large rubber attachment is part of the accessory. If everything has drained off after working with the plunger or compressed air gun, rinse and then repeat the process again to remove any remaining deposits.
Use a coil to clear the clogged toilet
Craftsmen have professional motorized spirals that they can use to clear even the toughest clogs. For private households there are cheaper models that are operated with muscle power. They essentially consist of a flexible metal shaft about two to five meters long. A rotatable handle is attached to one end, a drill head or pliers head or a combination of both at the other.
The advantage of a spiral: If you can no longer see where the toilet is clogged, you can use the flexible spiral to get deep into the drain pipe - right up to the clogged point. To do this, run the spiral through the toilet bowl and pipe until you encounter resistance. Then slowly mill your way through the blockage with crank movements on the handle. To do this, move the spiral back and forth powerfully but gently. In this way, the milling head gradually shreds the deposits and the water flowing in washes them away.
The longer the spiral, the deeper it goes into the drain. But it is all the more difficult to tame it. Therefore, caution is advised: as with the other mechanical measures, the dirty water can splash. It is best to remove anything that could fall over or get dirty and cover the area around the toilet if necessary. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and not good clothing. You can prevent contamination that is too bad by additionally covering the toilet, for example with a larger plastic bag or foil.
The best household tips
What home remedies help with a clogged toilet?
Very few people are prepared for a toilet blockage with the right tool or a suction cup. But there are also aids in the household that can help in an emergency: If you have strong nerves and rubber gloves, you reach into the dirty water with your sleeves rolled up and feel whether you can reach the blockage by hand. Then the hand is the tool that crushes the wad. As a substitute and only in an absolute emergency, a sturdy wire such as from a clothes hanger or a kebab skewer can be used. Be careful with this, however: you must never lose the wire in the pipe! You should also not scratch the ceramic with it, otherwise you will roughen the surface and make it easier for dirt to adhere to this point.
If the blockage is further back in the pipe, the pressure principle can also be used without a rubber bell: A PET bottle without a bottom fulfills the same purpose. To do this, simply screw the lid on, insert the open end into the drain, and pump. Since this is only an emergency solution, the following also applies here: Caution! The hard plastic of the bottle can be quite sharp. You should therefore not touch the ceramic with this either.
In milder cases, vinegar and baking soda can do a little chemical miracle if the toilet is clogged. When the sodium from the baking powder and acetic acid react, a lot of carbonic acid is released, which expands and thus develops pressure. This is another way of clearing blockages.
How to prevent a clogged toilet
The most effective prevention is the proper use of the toilet. Therefore, use the toilet only for its intended purpose and under no circumstances as a convenient trash can.
Also make sure that you always flush with the full amount of water in "big business" so that the toilet contents are carried away with enough momentum. Saving water does not make sense at this point.
If you want to be absolutely sure, you can occasionally leave household vinegar to soak in the toilet overnight. The acetic acid decomposes the inevitable urine stone, against the formation of which one can hardly do anything even with careful hygiene. Do this regularly, take precautions and avoid clogging the toilet. This not only saves you a lot of trouble, but also time, money and nerves.
