On the second and last day of the new MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin, around 2000 visitors came to Station-Berlin. The central topics on Wednesday were the future of journalism and the democratization of the media: How do you win over readers or viewers? How will articles be received in the future? How can journalistic offers be financed? Leading media makers, entrepreneurs and journalists were invited to discuss the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.

Out of the dark

What did the Snowden case do to freedom of the press? At the MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin, Ole Reissmann (Spiegel Online) and Jacob Appelbaum, freelance journalist (Der Spiegel) spoke about the machinations of the secret services and security authorities. After the Snowden leaks on the global surveillance and espionage attack, Appelbaum found the state methods of intimidation in the USA to be massive and moved to Berlin. Appelbaum has applied for a residence permit in Germany and, according to his own statement, does not want to return to the USA. "German journalism serves the public interest, American journalism serves political institutions," is Appelbaum's conclusion. Dealing with journalists is a fundamental sign of the state of a state. "How journalists are affected by the persecution affects the press as a whole, and that affects society as a whole."

The Future of News - The Crowd versus The Editor?

Richard Porter from the BBC, Rowan Barnett from Twitter, Benjamin Ruth from VICE Media and Måns Adler, founder of Bambuser, spoke at "The Future of News - The Crowd vs. the Editor?" about the advantages and disadvantages of citizen journalism.

All participants agreed that it is not about one against each other, but about one with one another in the future. "The journalists and the 'crowd' work together, complement each other, benefit from each other. The most important thing is the trust of viewers, listeners and users in the information. [...] This is why our editors spend a lot of time checking information. So basically what journalists have always done, "said Richard Porter of BBC Global News.

Also for Rowan Barnett, Germany boss of Twitter, the 'crowd' and the journalists do not work against each other, but complement each other. It is an important tool for journalists to get information and to create content for breaking news. "In the past few years, a lot of breaking news from around the world has been on Twitter first and then picked up by journalists," said Barnett. Benjamin Ruth, head of VICE Media Germany, also emphasizes the information advantage that journalists would get from users' news. "We have millions of new employees through social networks and platforms. The job of journalists is to check the information and to put it into context. Only if we put what we have seen and read into a context, there is added value."

Måns Adler, who has created an app with his company Bambuser that enables video streams in real time, speaks of the advantages that even large media companies would have with this form of news production: "The costs for journalistically produced films, especially from abroad are too high for most editors. They can continue working on the basis of the crowd's material. " Richard Barnett from Twitter confirms this: "The crowd is everwhere. The media companies are not." For Benjamin Ruth, the social platforms as a 'feedback channel' are a decisive advantage in that there is no longer a top-down process, but an active dialogue between the editorial team and the crowd. This is where the real power lies: "Building public opion. Creating what democracy is about. That's the beauty of social media."

Major construction site quality television

In the session "Large construction site for quality television", Dr. Carsten Brosda (Media Officer of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg), Marc Jan Eumann (State Secretary for Federal Affairs, Europe and the Media), Thomas Frickel (Executive Chairman AG DOK), Prof. Hermann Rotermund (Head of the Basic Services 2.0 project at Leuphana University) and Patricia Schlesinger (head of the culture and documentaries program at NDR) discussed the future of public television. The representatives of the public service sector themselves see a need for reform in their own ranks. Patricia Schlesinger: "It cannot go on as before. The system has to be renewed, transparency increased. What we need are narrower structures, a narrower, more flexible apparatus!" Thomas Frickel sees the solution in the audience: "The fee payers have to be more involved, public broadcasting has to be brought into the middle of society! Transparency, participation, democratic participation should provide a boost to creativity in public TV!" The session also dealt with the introduction of the much discussed youth channel: "The acceptance among young people is the point of concern. We have to place young offers in prime time on the main channels. A youth channel should be developed publicly and not behind closed doors," said Prof. Hermann Rotermund.

The "Breaking News" show: 23 theses of the future of the media

At the "Breaking News" show, Ole Reissmann (Spiegel Online), Jessica Binsch (German Press Agency) and Hakan Tanriverdi (freelance journalist, Süddeutsche.de) summarized the latest developments in the media world.

Content across borders! How to create Borderless Access to Public Broadcast in Europe

How can the contradictions between national, fee-financed television content and a global Internet be resolved? And how would the legal situation have to be modified to enable access in the EU? Ingrid Deltenre (Director EBU), Marie Humeau (EDRI) and Lorena Boix Alonso (EU Commission) discussed this.

Moderator Solona Larsen drew attention to the great demand on the part of users for this offer right from the start: "Citizen expect to be provided with material from all public broadcasters across Europe." Ingrid Deltenre formulated three problem areas: Media producers are exposed to the pressure to make their programs and productions more accessible, but above all have to cover the national market. The globalization of the film industry with high diversification at the same time poses a further problem. Ultimately, globally operating media companies are exposed to a large number of national regulations.

Lorena Boix Alonso described the task of the EU Commission to establish a simplified legal basis, especially in the area of ​​copyright law, at the European level. The balance between a public and private system creates the prerequisites for a pluralistic media offer. Marie Humeau concluded that the market had not yet provided a sufficient solution for distribution "across borders" and that the legislature had to intervene.

The first Web Week Night in the STATION

The first Web Week Night took place on Tuesday evening in STATION-Berlin, where visitors to re: publica, MEDIA CONVENTION Berlin and NEXT celebrated together. In cooperation with the XJAZZ and Reeperbahn Festival, bands and DJs played on two stages - Heidi Mortenson, the DJ team "karmafauna" or the band "Chris Adams & Trio 68" presented by the XJazz Festival created a lounge atmosphere on Stage 1. On Stage 2, the Berlin band U3000, BOKKA and the singer DENA created a party atmosphere.
