Both younger colleagues and their own children can only shake their heads uncomprehendingly when veteran editors talk about research in the eighties and early nineties of the past millennium: Telephones, reference works and information sent by post were among the tools of choice. Although the first versions of the Netscape Navigator were available at the beginning of the 1990s, the information density in the emerging World Wide Web was rather low - quite apart from the often missing Internet connection.

Today the browser has become the everyday tool of most "knowledge workers" as well as all other computer users. However, many users complain that working with this software is not always as productive as desired: In addition to the functionalities of the different browsers that do not exactly meet the needs and requirements of the users, it is all too often the many distractions that surfing in the Make the Internet a rather unproductive activity. Fortunately, almost all browser models can be supplemented with add-ons: We looked around and introduce add-ons that promise to make surfing with the browser more efficient and, above all, more productive.

The browser versions that were current at the time of the test at the end of 2015 were used on two systems under Windows 10 Enterprise and Professional and on one computer under Windows 7 Professional: Firefox 43.0.4, Chrome version 47.0.2526.111 and Internet Explorer in update version 11.0. 26. Unfortunately, we had to find out that some add-ons that deal with increasing productivity were not yet compatible with the current version 43.0.4 of the Firefox browser at the time of testing. All the add-ons presented here, however, worked without any problems with this browser version.
