Working in the non-profit sector: In the service of the non-profit

Do you want to work for something you can identify with? The goals of non-profit organizations have a social significance. Compared to the free economy, this is not just about numbers - but it also doesn't work without management.

Foundations, associations, initiatives and associations - these are non-profit organizations (NPOs) that pursue charitable purposes. Usually they live from the commitment of the volunteers. But this commitment is endangered in the long run, because very few people have long-term free time resources. As soon as a financial compensation for the commitment becomes possible - even if it is small - the chances for continuous cooperation increase. Therefore: In order for a non-profit organization to be sustainable, a solid basis must be created with donations or public money.

So that it doesn't stop with voluntary work

Non-profit organizations operate differently from companies. There are no customers paying for orders. Rather, financial resources must be obtained so that a service can be offered. That is the job of the fundraiser - the fundraiser.

These can be government contracts, donations or income from membership fees. Many business models of the past only work to a limited extent today: a few years ago, foundations were able to finance their employees with the interest that the foundation's capital yielded. But interest rates are now so low that new financing models are necessary.

Motivation and economic knowledge

Money can only come into your coffers with professional management know-how. Fundraising experts don't walk through the streets with the donation box, but rather consider which actions could be considered for raising funds. You advertise the charitable goals of an organization or a specific project.

Knowledge of project management is just as much a part of the fundraiser's portfolio as communicative talents and an engaging, serious demeanor. The professional background is less important. Successful fundraisers come from the humanities and social sciences as well as from the fields of marketing and business administration. Talented lateral entrants from other disciplines are also welcome. Since fundraising is about finances, a basic understanding of economics is essential. If a corresponding bachelor's degree has not been chosen, this knowledge is imparted in further education masters:

Bachelor degree Business administration and social management
master Management of cultural and non-profit organizations, Distance learning>
master Nonprofit Management and Governance (part-time)>

Job market for salespeople with a vision

Non-profit organizations are classic employers for idealists. In addition to the large traditional employers such as foundations, charities or aid organizations, cultural associations, sports clubs, universities and cultural institutions such as museums and theaters are increasingly looking for new financing models. Environmental protection associations and health care facilities are also dependent on funds from fundraising.

The fundraiser finances his position himself if he meets his specifications - or even better, exceeds them. It is subject to strong performance control. This is no different from other sales professionals.
