All Amazon Kindle e-book readers put to the test All Amazon Kindle eBook readers in the test, check and comparison

Amazon Kindle E-Book Reader - The essentials explained in a nutshell

An Amazon Kindle e-book reader differs from other e-readers in three important ways. Interested parties should consider this before making a purchase:

  • No online loan: The online loan is a digital loan of eBooks in public libraries. This is not supported by Amazon Kindle e-readers. Amazon offers its own alternatives here.
  • AZW eBook format: An Amazon Kindle eBook reader mainly uses the in-house AZW format. eBooks in ePUB format are not supported. Kindle users are therefore mainly dependent on the Amazon.de shop when buying e-books.
  • Special offers: Amazon is sponsoring the price of its Kindle eBook reader with advertising on the stand-by screen and a small advertising banner on the home page. If you want, you can have these removed for a fee.

In practice, we did not find the special offers overlay to be annoying. These do not appear on the book pages and on the start screen page this is very discreetly attached to the bottom of the screen. If you don't like advertising, you can order an Amazon Kindle e-reader without special offers for a surcharge, or you can have it removed afterwards, which requires a call to customer support.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite - our editorial recommendation

Comfortable size, razor-sharp picture, bluetooth and water resistance. The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite was able to convince across the board in the test and offers the perfect introduction to the Amazon Kindle eBook reading world.

Amazon Kindle - the cheap alternative to the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

The entry-level basic model Amazon Kindle is a technically stripped-down version of the Kindle Paperwhite. The device reacts quickly to user input and when the page is opened, which is why it is quickly loved. Reading in the bathtub is unfortunately not possible with Amazon Kindle.

Amazon Kindle Oasis - large eReader with page turning keys

The Amazon Kindle Oasis model is a very good choice for all readers who like to read in large font and prefer buttons to turn the pages. With its 7 inch display, the device is the largest Amazon Kindle e-book reader.

Amazon Kindle Oasis (10th Gen.)
High end eReader with adjustable color temperature of the front light. With waterproof 7 inch Paperwhite display with 300 ppi.

Amazon Kindle Kids Edition - special edition for young readers

The Amazon Kindle Kids Edition is technically the basic Amazon Kindle model that comes with a colorful protective cover and provides access to content that is tailored for children and teenagers.

The 10th Generation Kindle with a child-friendly cover includes 1 year access to FreeTime Unlimited and many books.

Amazon Kindle eBook reader - a technical comparison of all current models

Amazon Kindle Oasis offers the largest display at 7 inches and, like Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, is waterproof to IPX8. Amazon Kindle Kids Edition is almost identical to the entry-level device Amazon Kindle, but has more memory.

Amazon Kindle e-book reader - this is how our test comparison came about

For the evaluation in our Amazon Kindle comparison, we used our own tests of the individual models. In addition, we have also taken into account tests by other editorial offices or the renowned Stiftung Warentest for our 360-degree comparisons in order to avoid tunnel vision. In addition to tests, we also read customer opinions on the products during our extensive research on the eReaders. All of these factors ultimately went into our Amazon Kindle ratings.

E-book reader Amazon Kindle Paperwhite in the test - recommendation of the editors

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite offers a classic 6 inch display, which is the equivalent of a paperback for e-book readers. At 300 ppi, the resolution is very high and almost twice as high as the Amazon Kindle entry-level device. This means that not only text is displayed razor-sharp, but also graphics. So comics can also be read on the eReader. Amazon has had its own comic book service here since it took over Comixology. The special thing about it: The panels are shown enlarged individually, users can navigate through a slide show by tapping them.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is waterproof and, thanks to Bluetooth, is also suitable for audio books (Amazon)

Like all other Amazon Kindle eBook readers, Amazon Kindle Paperwhite offers Bluetooth cut silence. Users can use it to download audiobooks from Amazon's subsidiary Audible to the eReader and listen to them via connected Bluetooth headphones. This worked without any problems in our Kindle Paperwhite test. The interlocking of the various Amazon services is what makes all Kindle e-readers so attractive. Since the devices usually move in their own Amazon universe, this gives the user intuitive operation. The price for this is a more or less closed system and the dependence on Amazon. Is that a disadvantage? No: Amazon offers almost all available eBooks, as well as foreign-language titles. Only the ePUB format used by other providers cannot be read.

Globetrotters will also learn to love the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. The eBook reader is waterproof according to the IPX8 standard and can therefore also be taken to the beach or in the bathtub. So if you have already enjoyed buying books on Amazon and have an Amazon account, you will quickly feel at home with our price-performance recommendation among Kindle e-readers and spend many exciting hours reading with the device.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite pricing and availability

Depending on the equipment, the prices for the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite vary. We recommend the 8 GB WLAN variant with special offers, for which Amazon has announced an RRP of 116.96 euros. The 32 GB WLAN variant is actually not worthwhile, as Amazon provides unlimited free cloud storage space for Amazon content. (As of: 10/2020)

Amazon Kindle in the test - inexpensive entry-level e-reader with extras

The basic e-book reader from Amazon, Amazon Kindle, has a 6-inch screen like Amazon Kindle Paperwhite and can also display 16 shades of gray. The two devices are also similar in terms of operation: it is very easy to use via the touch display. In comparison, however, Amazon Kindle offers a lower resolution of 176 ppi (Kindle Paperwhite: 300 ppi). When reading, however, there was almost no noticeable difference in our Amazon Kindle test. The differences only became clear when the image was displayed. The typeface was clear at all times, individual pixels were not recognizable.
