Should I learn how to read lips
Read from your lips
Paying attention to mouth movements, facial expressions and body language is worthwhile, not least for a person who is hard of hearing. "Hearing with eyes and ears" is not an innate ability, but demands great effort and strength from the hearing impaired.
The best way to develop oral reading technique is to work in groups and settings where oral reading is supported and encouraged. In many places there are special courses for learning how to read lipids. If there is no offer in your area, ask family and friends for support in teaching yourself lip reading or with the help of video cassettes.
There is always something new to learn because faces and dialects are different, but the more you learn, the better and more confidently you can communicate.
Learning to lip read takes time, patience, and understanding, but it is well worth it. Ask the person you are speaking to look at you, turn their face towards the light, and speak clearly.
What to keep in mind while lip reading:
- Sit down so that you can easily see the face of the person you are speaking to
- Visualize speech sounds and try to remember what the mouth looks like when the speech sounds are pronounced. Your memory can help you identify sounds you can no longer hear.
- Pay attention to the movements of the other person's mouth, tongue and jaw. If you don't understand anything, ask him to rephrase the sentence.
- Pay attention to the speaker's facial expression. The facial expression allows many conclusions to be drawn about the topic and the mood.
- Pay attention to the gestures of your interlocutor such as nodding, pointing, looking, etc.
- Find out what the conversation is about as quickly as possible. This will make it easier for you to identify the words.
Remember that lip reading is a combination of seeing, listening, and feeling that can be fatiguing. Give your eyes a little rest in between.
